Even leaving right close to nine we made it into Galveston by 12:20, just in time to pick T up for some lunch at Chili's. The boys had a good conversation, and I kinda drifted in and out, still attempting to wake up! We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in their apt, while they were still at work. I think all three of us got naps in!!
When T got home we went and walked around Galveston, and went to the pier. John enjoyed looking at all the sites and people. Bella actually made the long walk with us, and she kept up!! Then we picked Sarah up from work, and came home and made yummy pizza! We spent the evening talking about life issues, particularly how do you find time for each other when you are busy working and doing ministry. We also discussed family and where we came from and why we turned out the way we did! It was a really neat time, and we enjoyed being able to encourage them from all the hard lessons we had learned.
Saturday our plans were to ride the trolley & the ferry & maybe go to the beach. Big plans, I know! All of us, including John ended up sleeping in a little so we had a late breakfast, lounged around while John napped his morning nap, and then got ready for the day. We ate lunch at Quizno's (interesting fact: there are very few fast food restaurants in Galveston, particularly on the strip) and then walked to the trolley pickup. After waiting for nearly half an hour and seeing only buses and no trolleys (even though I could have sworn I saw one running earlier that day), we decided to try the ferry route. I was bummed, cuz I really wanted to show Chris & John the trolley. I had ridden on it when I came to visit my friend Carol 4ish years earlier, and I loved all the history they tell about the island.
The ferry was tons of fun. John enjoyed watching the water. I learned I was a nervous Nelly worrying about my boys if their hats were gonna fall in the water. Aye! We even got to see some dolphins jumping in the distance. We also enjoyed people watching. Then we went home to put John down for his afternoon nap and started getting dinner ready. Sarah is so creative with her meals. We had some delicious lasagna, some crackers and cream cheese dip, some yummy green beans, and some delicious bread! Then T taught us a new game, Munchkins, which I was a bit leery about at first, but it turned out to be lots of fun.
Sunday was church and Chris got to teach the high school Sunday School class. It was T & Sarah's week, so T asked Chris if he would like to. He realized it takes a lot of time and energy and love to work with highschoolers. They aren't quite as willing to volunteer answers as the soldiers we've worked with. We tried to do both Sunday School & church with John, but b/c of when he woke up, he was extra fussy & squirmy by the time church came around, so Chris walked back to the apt, and put him down for a nap. I was really bummed cuz church was really good, and I wanted him to be there for it, especially cuz Clay is a chaplain in the National Guard. One thing that really got me thinking, is God has commanded us to take care of the widows & the poor and they are all around us, what are we doing about it? It convicted me about how I was living in Killeen.
We then joined up with a crowd of the young married and headed off to a yummy Mexican restaurant (within walking distance of the church-T & Sarah gave up one of their cars, b/c almost everywhere is within walking or biking distance for them). We kind of were off to the side, so we didn't really get to know any of them, but had fun listening in on the conversations. John decided to nap once more when we got home, and woke up just in time to go to Moody Gardens. One of T & Sarah's friends who worked there was able to get us in free after 4:30. He showed us all the backstage areas, and made looking at fish extremely interesting. He was so passionate about each one, and how they were created. It was fun! John thoroughly enjoyed himself, but got a wee bit scared with the bigger, uglier fish. We got to go up into where the workers go, and look down into the penguin tank, and also into a ginormous fish tank where sharks and giant sea turtles and other fun creatures were housed. It was an extremely fun and worthwhile experience (although I'm sure glad it was free, cuz the tickets to get in run near $40. Yikes!). It pays to know people!!!!
We had another relaxing evening eating Sonic, and playing Munchkins. We had to say bye to Sarah that evening, as she had to work the next day. After a lazy morning, we finally took off back home, stopping in College Station to eat at Jack in the Box. We always knew John could eat, but when he ate an entire breakfast Jack by himself, we knew we were in trouble. I always thought boys ate you out of house and home when they were teenagers, not when they were 10 months old. Good grief!
Monday afternoon, one of our friends was having a birthday/Memorial Day BBQ, so we made it back to Temple to Chris's dad's house to rest for an hour, and attempt to get John to sleep, as he didn't in the car before we went. Unfortunately no such luck in getting him to sleep. Right as he was settling down, Dad & Penny & JR showed up, so he was awake with all the new people to see and play with. Unfortunately b/c of this, we had to eat and run once we got to Janice's b/c he was so crabby. Poor guy! I think he actually went to bed at 6 that evening, and we weren't too far behind him!
T & Sarah had a ping pong table, so John decided he wanted to play with the boys!
